Die Grundlage hierfür bilden zwei Untersuchungen der Einkommens-, Konsum- und Verschuldungsmuster der Jugendlichen in Deutschland, die 2006 bzw. 2007 von Elmar Lange und Karin Fries veröffentlicht wurden. Nachdem einführend kurz die Begriffe „Konsum“ und „Konsumgesellschaft“ erläutert werden, wird unter Zuhilfenahme der eben genannten Studie auf die Einnahmen und Ausgaben der Jugendlichen eingegangen. Es folgt eine knappe Darstellung des Sparverhaltens und der Verschuldungsmuster, die den meisten Teenagern innewohnen. Des Weiteren interessiert, welche Güter von den Jugendlichen in welchem Maße käuflich erworben werden. Im dritten Abschnitt werden die Hauptfaktoren, die das Konsumverhalten beeinflussen („soziales Umfeld“, „Erziehung der Eltern“ und „Einkommen der Eltern“) untersucht.
Da die modernen Medien nicht nur eine zentrale Rolle im Leben der youngster sondern auch bezüglich ihres Kaufverhaltens spielen, soll der Schwerpunkt der Arbeit auf dem Medium web, dass in den letzten drei Jahrzehnten eine erstaunliche Entwicklung genommen hat, liegen. Im vierten Kapitel gilt es herauszufinden, inwiefern dieses das Konsumverhalten der Jugendlichen beeinflusst.
Das abschließende Fazit fasst nicht nur die Ergebnisse der Untersuchung zum Konsumverhalten Jugendlicher zusammen, sondern es soll des Weiteren versucht werden auf die Leitfrage nach der Rolle des Internets beim Konsumverhalten der Kinder und Jugendlichen eine Antwort zu geben.
